Metropolitans vs. Mermaids

"You don't have to be great when you're that good." That's what Marlon Anderson said about Johan Santana today.

Johan Santana is still filthy. I was a little nervous because the Metsies have had a history of acquiring bums, but he still has that same good stuff. Santana's changeup might be the best pitch in the game, even though he allowed a HR on it today. The HR never should have happened either. He walked Hanley Ramirez to lead off the fourth inning after getting a no call on a two-strike fastball that had Ramirez starting towards the dugout and Schneider about to throw it around. Two pitches later Ramirez walked, the first Marlin baserunner of the game. Santana got the next two batters on weak outs, before leaving a changeup high and in to Willingham, who parked it. Willingham never should have batted that inning.

Other notes from opening day:

*Carlos Delgado looked pathetic. Two soft bloopers to SS, a sorry-ass groundball, and a walk. I don't think he can get the bat started anymore. He's got too many hitches and twitches and weird shit going on before he starts the bat forward.

*I hate to say it, because I don't want to sound like a baseball good 'ole boy, but Hanley Ramirez was living up to his 'laziness'. First he failed to cover second on a bunt, and then failed to back up third on a wild pitch, on consecutive pitches.

*Jorge Sosa is going to throw 97% sliders this year.

*Dan Uggla didn't look so bad at 2B. A good example of why you don't make judgements after watching one game.

*Jose Reyes got 'caught stealing' today. Only in the umpire's eyes.

*Church hit the ball hard three times today. He's going to be real solid and should be batting ahead of Delgado.

*There is nothing wrong with cheerleaders in baseball....
